TOP QUESTIONS

There are a lot of questions that people have when visiting an acupuncturist for the first time. If anything is unclear or unanswered, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

HOW SHOULD I PREPARE FOR MY FIRST TREATMENT?

You may find it easier to wear loose comfortable layers, many acupuncture points are located on the lower arms and legs. Modesty and comfort will be protected at all times.

It is advisable to have a light meal or snack , allowing time for digestion, prior to your session.

DOES ACUPUNCTURE HURT?

The answer for most people is no. The needles are in a guide tube so you can feel the pressure of this on your skin rather than the needle going in. Some people feel a dull ache but that passes quickly. Some people even fall asleep during the session.

WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT FROM MY FIRST SESSION?

The first session lasts an hour,  to spend time getting to know your current health picture and make a diagnosis. You will then lay down on a couch whilst the needles are inserted. The number of needles used will depend on you and your diagnosis . They will be left in place for around 20 minutes whilst you relax.

IS ACUPUNCTURE SAFE ?

Acupuncture is safe when delivered by a properly trained practitioner . Look for accredited, licenced and insured practitioners when making a booking .

Side effects are very rare, sometimes a small bruise may appear at the site of needle insertion. Some people feel tired after a session , others feel energised. Rest afterwards if appropriate for you.

HOW MANY SESSIONS DO I NEED?

There is no standard answer here , it depends on the individual. Chronic conditions may need more sessions than acute ones . Many people find improvements after only a couple of  sessions. As the effects are often cumulative, I would suggest 4-6 sessions and then review.

WHAT CONDITIONS DO ACUPUNCTURISTS SEE ?

Acupuncture is used in a very wide number of issues . The following are commonly seen in clinic but this is far from an exhaustive list :  Insomnia and sleep issues, Headache and migraine, digestive issues, menstrual disorders/menopause , body aches and pains, arthritis and musculoskeletal issues, anxiety, stress and depression, fatigue, hayfever .........
